My Kind of People

From day one, I knew they were my kind of people—the type of folk who go out of their way to be known by their neighbors and make themselves available. Some may call it Southern hospitality, but now, honey, there ain’t no two Southerners that are the same. From the moment they moved here, they sent out a note to everyone on our dead-end street (what all y’all Yankees call a cul-de-sac)  to introduce themselves and their fur babies and let everyone know how to reach them if they needed a helping hand.

I’ll admit, it was some time before I ever reached out. This is mainly because I don’t walk to the shared mailbox unit every day. I mostly receive the basic mail everyone does, I suppose, where you throw it away, wishing they would stop wastin’ them pretty little trees.  Finally, the day came when I received the prettiest note I had seen in a long time, complete with their photograph on it as well as an introduction and contact information.  A couple of weeks passed, and I decided to send a message on my cellular device to share which house I reside in and introduce myself.  We connected a few times through messages but never met, and I don’t think anything poorly about hard-working folks with a bun in the oven who just simply don’t have the time they wish they had to be seen more by their neighbors.

Their action made me wish I had done differently when I moved in.  Three years later, I am takin’ steps to be seen more by others.  I love my neighbors.  Bless their hearts.

Lizzyann, Your neighbors sound wonderful! I am sure they were encouraged by your response. So glad to hear you are making attempts to meet more of the people in your area!
